The work behind brain-sensing earbuds

NextSense’s own technical white papers, methods, and study protocols on in- and around-ear EEG — published here in full. We show our work: real cohort results where we have them, honest status badges where we don’t, and a measurement-first posture throughout.

Brain-Guided Audio: Decoding Cognitive and Physiological States from Ear-EEG, from Sleep to Focus

A review of the evidence for decoding a graded hierarchy of cognitive and physiological states from in- and around-ear EEG — sleep, alertness, attention, and calm — and the brain-guided audio framework in which decoded brain states drive personalized auditory feedback. From NextSense.

Beyond Band Power: Aperiodic (1/f) and Waveform-Aware Analysis of Ear-EEG

On real NextSense ear-EEG, band power can invert conclusions. Using a parameterized spectral model (specparam) and cycle-by-cycle waveform metrics on two cohorts, NextSense shows the aperiodic 1/f exponent steepens into deep sleep, naive alpha power points the wrong way, and aperiodic-aware features decode sleep as well as band power.

Real-Time Multimodal Sleep Staging from Consumer Wearable Sensors Validated Against Ear-EEG: A Study Protocol

A pre-registered study protocol to evaluate whether sleep stages can be predicted in real time from a consumer smartwatch (heart rate, accelerometer, microphone), validated against simultaneous ear-EEG as the reference standard. Pre-data; execution pending IRB approval. From NextSense.

Toward Focus Decoding from Ear-EEG: A Shipped Measurement Pipeline and a Corpus-Collection-at-Scale Design

NextSense describes a measurement-first approach to focus from ear-EEG: a shipped per-second pipeline that logs two grounded markers — relative alpha and the aperiodic 1/f exponent — under artifact gating, to build a labeled real-world corpus from which a validated focus detector can later be earned. No focus score is shipped.
